Food

Restaurants

I haven't been in Spanish reastaurants but the best reastaurant I have been here is Forster's Hollywood. It is an american restaurant and the burgers are excellent.

You must also to eat in 100 Montaditos. The prices are very low and on Wednesdays and Sundays they are even lower! For example a caesar salad costs 2 € (it is not even small) and drinks 1 €.

Orange juice is very good in Madrid and I recommend to take jugo de naranja (orange juice) at least once when you are in a restaurant. And you need to also eat paella (common Spanish food), ham (jamon) and churros (read the post here).

Markets

There are a lot of small markets in Madrid. Those are good choises if you are buying vegetables or fruits.

It is hard to find a hypermarket with large selection near the city. I prefer Lidl but there is mostly its own brands. Día and Carrefour are also good groceries but those are more expensive compared to Lidl. Mercadona, El Corte Ingles (the grocery is downstairs) is a good choice when you are looking for international brands.
